Talulah Riley Recalls Elon Musk Walking Barefoot in the Snow to Pick Her Christmas Flowers

Talulah Riley, the English actress twice married to Elon Musk, has shared a fond memory from the early years of their relationship, describing how the Tesla and SpaceX CEO once forgot to buy her a Christmas gift — and made up for it by heading out into the snow at night, barefoot, to pick flowers instead.

The Story

Riley recounted the moment in a BBC documentary about Musk, recalling it as one of the lighter memories from a relationship that was, by her own account, often overshadowed by the intense pressure Musk was under at the time. She has said he was working punishing hours across multiple companies during that period, juggling Tesla, SpaceX, and other ventures simultaneously. According to Riley, she worried about the toll the stress was taking on him, even fearing for his health.

Against that backdrop, the Christmas gift mix-up stood out to her as something almost tender. Rather than treat the oversight as a minor failure, Musk apparently approached it the way he treats most problems: head-on. With no shops open and no gift in hand, he went outside in the snow without shoes to gather flowers, presenting them to Riley as his solution.

The two met in London in 2008, when Riley was 22. She has previously described Musk as eccentric and unusually interesting compared to others she had met. They went on to marry in 2010 at Dornoch Cathedral in the Scottish Highlands, divorced in 2012, remarried in 2013, and divorced again in 2016.

A Friendly Aftermath

What stands out about Riley's account is less the story itself than the tone she has consistently taken when discussing Musk since their second divorce. In past interviews, she has pushed back against descriptions of Musk as cold or unfeeling, instead describing him as a close friend who looks out for her. She has called him, in her own words, the ideal ex-husband — someone she remains genuinely fond of despite the relationship not working out twice.

That framing has remained consistent over the years, even as Riley has moved on. She married actor Thomas Brodie-Sangster, known for his role in *Love Actually*, in June 2024, after the two met on the set of the Disney+ series *Pistol*.

Why It Resonates

Stories like this tend to circulate because they offer a contrast to the public image most people have of Musk as a hard-driving, business-focused figure. A small, low-cost gesture — picking flowers in the snow rather than buying something — reads as more personal than anything money could buy, which is likely why Riley has chosen to share it publicly more than once.

It also reflects a broader pattern in how Riley talks about their marriages: acknowledging the difficulty of the relationship's timeline without disowning the good parts of it. Two marriages and two divorces could easily be framed as a cautionary tale, but Riley's retelling leans toward nostalgia instead.
